Phokeng officer drowns during chase after tip-off on robbery and burglary suspect

POTCHEFSTROOM – 6 February 2026 – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West has confirmed the death of a police officer who drowned while on duty in the Phokeng policing area.

According to a media statement issued by the provincial commissioner’s office, Constable Gift Mota (25), attached to the Visible Policing Crime Prevention Unit in Phokeng, drowned during a foot chase on Wednesday, 4 February 2026.

SAPS said Mota and fellow members were conducting patrol duties when they were approached by a community member who alleged they had spotted a suspect linked to robbery and burglary cases. Police accompanied the informant to the Masosobane and Raffredy sections, described as a bushy area with a nearby dam.

On spotting the suspect, police gave chase. SAPS said the suspect ran into the dam and, during the pursuit, Constable Mota entered the water and later disappeared from sight while swimming behind the suspect.

A diving unit was activated and later recovered Mota’s body from the dam shortly after the incident. An inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

SAPS said Constable Mota was transferred to Phokeng in November 2025 and was originally from Ermelo in Mpumalanga.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, expressed condolences to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues, describing Mota as a dedicated member who made “the ultimate sacrifice” in the line of duty.

“We have lost a dedicated police officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while serving and protecting the community. Constable Mota’s bravery and commitment will not be forgotten. The police stands with his family during this painful time and will ensure that they receive the necessary support,” Naidoo said.

Naidoo also called on communities to continue working closely with police in the fight against crime, while acknowledging the dangers officers face during daily operations.
