Bloemhof police arrest 42-year-old for alleged possession of counterfeit notes

BLOEMHOF — A 42-year-old man has been arrested in Bloemhof for the alleged possession of counterfeit money after a local business owner reported a suspected fake note used during a purchase.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in the North West, police said the incident occurred on Friday, 16 January 2026, when a customer allegedly attempted to buy an item using a counterfeit R100 note. The shop owner reportedly identified the note as fake and immediately contacted SAPS.

Police responded swiftly and searched the suspect, during which additional counterfeit money totalling R3 200 was allegedly found in his possession. All suspected counterfeit notes were seized.

Preliminary investigations have also linked the suspect to another counterfeit money case in Bloemhof, police said.

The suspect has been formally charged and is expected to appear before the Bloemhof Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 January 2026.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo praised the business owner’s vigilance and the quick response by first responders, saying the arrest helped remove counterfeit currency from circulation and protect local businesses. He urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activity to the police.
