Man Accused of Deliberately Infecting Girlfriend with HIV

PRETORIA : A 47-year-old man from Boschkop has been granted R2,000 bail after appearing in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court, on Friday, 21 August 2026, on a charge of attempted murder, following allegations that he deliberately infected his girlfriend with HIV.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the accused and the 38-year-old complainant were in a relationship between October 2025 and June 2026. The complainant alleges that the accused told her he was HIV negative.

She allegedly discovered ARV medication in his bag on 26 June 2026 and confronted him. The accused allegedly admitted that he was HIV positive and claimed that he had intentionally infected her because he did not want her to enter into a relationship with another person.

The complainant subsequently underwent an HIV test on 25 July 2026 and was informed that she had tested positive. She reported the matter to police the following day, leading to the accused’s arrest at their residence.

The State did not oppose bail, indicating that the accused was not considered a flight risk. The court subsequently granted him bail of R2,000, finding that his release was in the interests of justice.

The matter has been postponed to 27 August 2026 for the determination of a regional court date.

The allegations against the accused have not been tested in court, and he remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
