Advocate Andy Mothibi to take office as NDPP on 2 February

Advocate Andy (Jan Lekgoa) Mothibi will formally assume office as South Africa’s new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) on Monday, 2 February 2026, following his appointment by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Presidency said the appointment was made in terms of section 179(1)(a) of the Constitution, read with section 10 of the National Prosecuting Authority Act, after an advisory panel ran an open selection process. The panel interviewed candidates and submitted its report to the President on 12 December 2025.

Mothibi joins the National Prosecuting Authority from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), where he has served as Head and where his tenure has been closely associated with intensified efforts to recover public funds and strengthen anti-corruption investigations. President Ramaphosa also thanked outgoing NDPP Advocate Shamila Batohi for her service.

Beyond the national appointment, Mothibi’s elevation has been welcomed by his alma mater, the North-West University (NWU), which described him as a standout graduate and public servant. He completed a BProc degree at NWU in 1987 and was recognised with the NWU Alumni Excellence Award for public service in 2021—an acknowledgment of a career spanning prosecution, the magistracy and senior legal, governance and risk-management roles, including leadership positions at SARS.

NWU said it believes Mothibi will bring integrity, strong leadership and an unwavering commitment to public service in the country’s prosecutions authority, and called on stakeholders to support him in the role.

Mothibi’s move to the NPA creates a vacancy at the SIU. The Presidency announced that Leonard Lekgetho, currently the SIU’s Chief Operations Officer, will serve as Acting Head of the SIU from 2 February 2026.
