North West Province has another reason to celebrate after Reatlegile Taukobong was announced as a new signing for Western Texas College in the United States.

The announcement—shared by Soweto Basketball Academy—describes Taukobong as a national team leader and highlights the move as a major step in both her sporting and academic journey, with her next chapter in American college basketball set to begin later this year. The signing lists her as a forward, while the academy also refers to her as a combo guard—an indication of her versatility and ability to contribute across multiple roles on the floor.
Taukobong’s move comes at a time when the Lady Westerners are looking for momentum in a difficult season. In their latest update, Western Texas recorded a much-needed breakthrough victory in Snyder, Texas, beating Midland College 56–43 to secure their first win of the campaign and snap a long losing streak that stretched across multiple months. The result also marked a rare home conference win for the programme, providing a morale boost after a challenging run of results.
In that win, Western Texas delivered some of its best shooting numbers of the season and limited Midland’s scoring output, with three players reaching double figures in points. The team’s season-to-date profile shows the scale of the rebuild still ahead: across 22 games, Western Texas has averaged 48.4 points per game, shooting 32.2% from the field, 23.7% from three-point range and 59.6% from the free-throw line, while pulling down 32.5 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game.
For supporters back home in South Africa—and especially in the North West—the signing is a reminder of what is possible when local talent gets the right platform. For Western Texas, Taukobong’s arrival later in the year adds fresh interest and optimism as the programme looks to build on its recent breakthrough and push for greater consistency going forward.
