Faith in Action: A.J. Wookey Youth Ministry Hosts Clothes & Pad Drive to Restore Dignity and Inspire Hope in Davondale

Devondale, North West | 01 May 2025 — In an uplifting show of compassion and purpose, the A.J. Wookey Memorial Youth Ministry hosted a Clothes and Pad Drive at the Devondale Home Based Centre, aimed at restoring dignity and instilling confidence in vulnerable girls and young women in the community. The initiative was not just about meeting material needs—it was an act of ministry, a lesson in giving, and a call to spiritual renewal.

The drive, themed “For Those in Need”, saw dozens of youth, community members, and church leaders gather to distribute sanitary pads and donated clothes to young girls, creating a safe space for empowerment and encouragement. Speaking on behalf of the ministry, Sister Onalenna Moepeng delivered a heartfelt lesson on the power of giving, reminding all present that “giving is a form of worship and a reflection of God’s grace in action.”

With singing and prayer forming part of the day’s proceedings, the event encouraged young people to embrace faith and actively participate in their local churches. “When we give with intention and serve with humility, we reflect Christ’s love,” said Moepeng.

The event also received support from local government, with the local ward councillor in attendance. Youth Chairperson Marang expressed gratitude, thanking the councillor for “standing with us and affirming the role of the church in building stronger communities.”

The initiative forms part of ongoing community outreach programmes by the youth ministry, aligned with the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA)’s mission to transform communities and systems for a just and hopeful future. True to the UCCSA’s vision, the youth ministry continues to be a beacon of light in its efforts to uplift the broken-hearted and mobilise young believers through acts of service and faith-driven activism.

As the sun rose over Devondale, so too did hope—restored in the hearts of young girls, encouraged in the minds of youth, and witnessed in the hands of a church committed to living out the Gospel.
