VRYBURG – While South Africa’s rising cost of living continues to place immense pressure on the taxi industry, the Naledi Municipality Taxi Association (NAMTA) says it remains committed to serving both commuters and the broader community, despite the many challenges facing the association.

According to NAMTA Chairperson Jimmy  Machogo, taxi operators are grappling with increasing financial pressures brought about by soaring fuel prices, the rising cost of vehicle maintenance and the overall economic climate, making it increasingly difficult for operators to remain sustainable.

Adding to these challenges is the rapid growth of illegal taxi operations within NAMTA’s areas of operation.

“The association recently identified around 12 illegal taxi ranks operating in and around the Naledi Local Municipality. Unfortunately, that number has since grown rapidly to more than 20 illegal taxi ranks and operations,” said Machogo.

He explained that these unregulated operations not only threaten the livelihoods of legitimate operators but also undermine the organised public transport system that has served local communities for many years.

Despite these obstacles, NAMTA says it remains committed to giving back to the communities it serves.

“We understand that times are difficult for many families. Even though our operators are also facing financial challenges, we believe it is important to continue helping those who are less fortunate with the little resources we have,” Machogo said.

As part of its ongoing community outreach programme, the association identifies vulnerable individuals and families on a weekly basis and provides assistance where possible. One of the key forms of support offered is free transport for funerals and other important community-related events, helping to ease the financial burden on struggling households.

Community members requiring assistance are encouraged to visit the NAMTA offices from Monday to Thursday during operating hours, where requests for support will be considered.

Machogo also expressed his appreciation to residents who continue to make use of NAMTA’s services.

“We sincerely thank the community for their continued support. Every passenger who chooses to travel with NAMTA helps sustain local taxi operators and enables us to continue giving back to those in need,” he said.

As economic pressures continue to affect both transport operators and commuters alike, NAMTA hopes that continued community support will enable the association to maintain its tradition of service while navigating the challenges facing the taxi industry.
