BRITS — following a joint response by Assen SAPS, near Brits, and members of the local farming community
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in the North West, the arrests were made around midday on Saturday, 17 January 2026, after police responded to a complaint at Kameeldrift along the R511 road.
Police allege that the four male suspects, who were travelling in a white Hyundai i10, were stopped by local farmers and held under supervision until officers arrived. A search of the vehicle reportedly led to the recovery of a pistol with a magazine and several rounds of ammunition. Police said no lawful ownership could be established for the firearm. Cash and nine cellphones were also seized.

Preliminary investigations indicate the suspects may be linked to an earlier robbery involving a police officer in Northam.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 January 2026, facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as robbery.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo praised the cooperation of the farming community and reiterated SAPS’ commitment to combating serious and violent crime in the province.
