The North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sport & Recreation (ACSR) in partnership with Onkgopotse Tiro Foundation is expected to, today 8 November 2019, host a Memorial Lecture of the late, at the Lehurutshe Civic Centre (Zeerust).
This memorial lecture is meant to honour and celebrate the legacy of Onkgopotse Tiro who was born in a historic Village of Dinokana in the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality and later became an active member of the South African Student Organisation (SOSA), out of which the black conscious movement emerged.

In 1974 he was assasinated by a parcel bomb while in Botswana at St Joseph’s college, whilst taking refuge at the college.
According to the department, some of the objectives to host this kind of event is to recognise the contribution made by this icon in the liberation struggle of South Africa. To create awareness and educate the community about the role that Onkgopotse Tiro played to bring about an end to the apartheid system and bantu education.
In maintaining Onkgopotse Tiro’s heritage legacy as an activist, educator and politician, the Department together with stakeholders have organised build-up activities such as knock-out soccer competition and fun walk for learners around Lehurutshe. This wil later be followed by the memorial lecture led by dr. Ralph Manyane, an Extraordinary professor in History, from the North West University.
