Editorial: SASCE CHAMPIONSHIPS BACK WITH A BANG!

Africa Month in Music 🎵 🎵 🎵 🎵

The South African Schools Chorale Eisteddfod (SASCE), The Dr. Ruth S. Mompati District Education Office under the North West Education Department, along side the ABC Motsepe Eisteddfod Programme banner hosted the District Championship from the 12th to the 14th of May 2022, at Greater Taung Subdistrict’s Batlhaping Secondary School.

This event saw great attendance by schools from all over the district, including John Frylinck Secondary School, Diteho Secondary School, Gaopalelwe Secondary School, to name a few. The District Choral Championships comes at the back of various Subdistrict Championships that were in April and May 2022.

The competition was recognized by the District Director, Ms. Mojakhumo Dithejane, through her official remarks. “Music is an enjoyable commemoration, it expresses peace, happiness and also motivates team spirits. Congratulations in advance for those that will be processed to the Province.” Director Dithejane remarked.

All very well fitting to coincide with May’s Africa Month 2022 theme, “The Year of Nutrition”. This is learners from all over the district, including Primary and Secondary levels, who got an opportunity to showcase to their peers and expect Judges the fruits from their nurturing. The Vryburg Independent Post Team (The VIP Team) had the privilege to listen in on the Naledi SubDistrict leg of the music championships, held on a few weeks ago on The Vryburg Theatre Stage.

Highlighting The VIP Team’s listening sessions, was the greatly anticipated, by the learners of course, Folklore and African Categories. This the team observed with obvious reasoning. This is as they observed that unlike the other prescribed and chosen elaborative offerings, the Folklore and African categories allowed the learners to be more expressive and deliberate at the same time. The learners arranged pieces included themes that raised awareness about Gender Based Violence, as one example, here it was clear that the schools tasked to blend in important social issues into the subjected categories. Keeping to the spirit of Africa Month, the learners graced the Theatre stage with pride in African regalia and expressions.

Present at Naledi Subdistrict Championships was Dr. RSM Officials from The Office of the District Director, Mme. M.V Dithejane. This delegation included Mr. Makhado , who also took to the podium to address the house, with a key message directed to the Learners and Conductors. Mr. Makhado encouraged the learners to share their experience at the competition. “This in an effort to galvanize more support from parents in nurturing of their guarded musical talents. Especially at this level of the competition where parents can bear witness to the kind of potential and talent in their kids that represent their schools at a national level.” Motivated Mr. Makhado.

12 Schools will be representing the District at the Provincial round of the Chorale Competition. This event returns in 2022, after its postponements due to the then COVID-19 regulations that restricted it in 2020 and 2021.

The Provincial Championship will take place from the 26th to the 27th of May 2022.
