POTCHEFSTROOM — The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West has confirmed the fatal stabbing of Sergeant Christoffer Lechuti (47), an off-duty detective attached to the Christiana Detective Unit, who was killed on Saturday afternoon, 7 February 2026.
In a media statement issued on 8 February 2026, the Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, conveyed condolences to Lechuti’s family, relatives, friends and colleagues, describing the loss as deeply saddening.
According to police, Lechuti was allegedly at a local tavern with a family member when two men kicked over his beer, leading to a verbal altercation. Police allege that during the confrontation, one of the men stabbed Lechuti in the chest with a sharp instrument. He was rushed to a local clinic but was declared dead shortly after arrival.

Following the incident, police activated their 72-hour activation plan to trace the suspects. A 46-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday night after allegedly surrendering to Christiana police, while a 32-year-old suspect was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning in Christiana.
The two suspects are expected to appear before the Christiana Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 9 February 2026, on a charge of murder. The matter will be investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).
Naidoo said the killing of a police officer through violent crime impacts service delivery, and he commended detectives for what he described as swift action that led to the arrests.
