As part of addressing illegal proliferation of firearms and trio crimes, police in Wolmaransstad arrested five suspects aged between 34 and 54 for illegal possession of firearms and business robbery. 

According to Colonel Adéle Myburgh, of the SAPS in the North West Province , the suspects’ arrest came after the police followed up on information that a business robbery was committed in Schweizer-Reneke at about 17:20 on Thursday,  7 February 2019 by unknown suspects travelling in a silver Mercedes Benz. The   suspects that were traced and found close to the railway line, sped off upon seeing the police.  With the police hot on their heels, the suspects abandoned their vehicle along the Ottosdal road and fled on foot.

“The suspects were eventually arrested with the assistance of members of the community and security officials, after they exchanged fire with the police. During the arrest, the police confiscated three firearms.” Myburgh clarified

The suspects appeared in the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 8 February 2019, and will remain in custody until their second court appearance on Friday, 15 February 2018.
