A 56-year-old secondary school principal from Huhudi Township in Vryburg has been arrested on charges of corruption and is expected to appear in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 June 2025.

The arrest was confirmed by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, widely known as the Hawks, following an investigation led by their Serious Corruption Investigation Unit.

According to the Hawks’ media statement, the principal allegedly solicited a bribe from a prospective teacher in exchange for a contract post. The alleged incident dates back to June 2024, when the principal reportedly demanded R30 000 in exchange for a teaching position at the school. The complainant is said to have initially paid R25 000, followed by a second payment of R5 500. The teacher was later appointed to the post.

“The suspect was apprehended and charged with two counts of corruption,” said Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, spokesperson for the Hawks. “She is due to appear in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.”
This arrest comes amid growing concern over corruption in school administration, particularly in employment practices. The incident has sparked outrage among community members and education stakeholders in the North West Province, with calls for accountability and transparency in school appointments.
The Department of Education in the province has yet to issue a formal response.
The Vryburg Independent Post will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates following Monday’s court proceedings.
