The chief whip of The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the North West, Jacqueline Theologo, has written to Premier Job Mokgoro, requesting him to call for a lifestyle audit for former MEC for Department of Social Development, Hoffman Galeng.

In her correspondence, Theologo, suggests Galeng needs to account for the R127 131.72 that was spent on the security personnel deployed to his private home in August and September 2018.

“The appearance before SCOPA of the Acting Head of Department, Director of Support Services and Security Manager on 5 February 2019 left us with more questions than answers.” Theologo said.

The SCOPA meeting revealed that FBL Trading and Morula Security have been hired for the respective months of August and September 2018.

“The DA found this to be unusual for two different companies to be hired and will therefore request the Chairperson of SCOPA, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng to call on the directors of these companies to also explain their involvement.” Theologo explained.

The Committee was told that protests in Huhudi, Galeng’s hometown, was the motivation for hiring the security services, but Theologo and the DA finds the reasons given for the discrepancies between the invoices and actual commencement of services have not been satisfactory.

0It is in the interest of the public to know whether the two security companies are linked to officials employed by the Department of Social Development and also whether these services have been rendered or whether the invoices were a ploy to launder money.” Theologo said.

The DA welcomed the recommendation by the Risk Management Unit of the Department that disciplinary steps be taken against the Security Manager and Director of Support Services, but we maintain that Galeng should be held accountable.

“Taking into consideration Galeng’s track record of spending over R100 000 on takeaways, fuel, groceries and rental cars in one day on his corporate credit card, it is only reasonable to request that he accounts for the security personnel guarding his private residence.” Theologo concluded .
