Every year on 8 May, World Donkey Day is commemorated to honour the resilience and contribution of one of the most overlooked animals in society: the donkey. Across South Africa, especially in rural areas such as Taung, Ganyesa, Stella, Morokweng, and the others, donkeys remain a lifeline for many households—transporting water, wood, food, and even people over long distances and difficult terrain.
In light of this, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) used the occasion to reflect on the ongoing work being done to improve the welfare of donkeys through educational outreach and welfare interventions. The organisation’s Donkey Upliftment Project continues to play a vital role in addressing issues such as overwork, poor treatment, and lack of proper harnessing or medical attention.

World Donkey Day is more than just a symbolic gesture—it’s a call to action. Donkeys are not just beasts of burden; they are key contributors to food security, local economies, and daily survival in many communities. Their wellbeing is closely tied to human dignity and sustainable livelihoods, making their protection a shared responsibility.
As part of this year’s observance, the focus has been on building awareness around humane treatment, responsible ownership, and community-based solutions to prevent abuse or neglect. Local animal welfare organisations continue to encourage residents to report cases of cruelty and to seek guidance on proper care practices.

This World Donkey Day, The Vryburg Independent Post salutes these humble animals and those who work tirelessly to protect them. Let us treat donkeys with the respect and compassion they deserve—not just today, but every day.
