Bopaganang Principal Released on R2000 Bail, Corruption Case Postponed

Boitumelo Cynthia Gopane (56), the principal of Bopaganang Secondary School in Vryburg who was arrested last week for alleged corruption, has been granted bail by the North West Division of the High Court of South Africa.

Gopane made an urgent bail application on Sunday, 01 June 2025, just a day before her expected appearance in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court. The application was successful, and she was released on R2000 bail. Her case has been postponed to Monday, 09 June 2025.

The principal is facing two counts of corruption following an investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit. The charges stem from allegations that she solicited R30 000 in bribes from a jobseeker in exchange for securing a contract teaching position at the school. The complainant allegedly paid R25 000 initially, followed by an additional R5 500. The teacher was later hired.

The case has drawn widespread attention in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, and the province at large, with many calling for accountability within the education sector. Community members and civil society groups are closely monitoring the developments, calling for decisive action against corruption in school appointments.

The Vryburg Independent Post will continue to follow the story as it unfolds and will provide updates following the court appearance on 09 June 2025.
