North-West University’s Soccer Institute (NWU) ground—famously dubbed The Slaughterhouse—erupted on Thursday night as the Eagles claimed a hard-fought 1–0 home win over Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Varsity Football Round 5.

After a cagey first half that finished 0–0—with both sides carving half-chances and the goalkeepers and back lines staying sharp—the game tilted purple in the 68th minute. A clever through ball split TUT’s defence and Momelezi Mngati arrived to finish emphatically, sending the grandstand into a frenzy and securing the points for NWU.
TUT, known as the Red Army, pressed for an equaliser, but NWU’s shape held firm and the hosts managed the closing stages well to protect the clean sheet. The victory pulls the Eagles “back in contention” in this year’s competition and restores momentum at a key point in the campaign.
The crowd played its part throughout, roaring every tackle and counter as NWU looked to break down a disciplined TUT outfit. The decisive moment came just after the hour when an incisive assist set Mngati free; he kept his cool to slot home the only goal of the evening. TUT pushed numbers forward late on, but the Eagles’ defensive unit, buoyed by confident goalkeeping, closed out the result.
The three points re-ignite NWU’s Varsity Football push following an intense opening block of fixtures. With the margins tight across the table, a single goal proved enough to bank a vital home win and energise the Mahikeng faithful for the run-in.
The match was staged under the Varsity Sports banner and supported by partners FNB, Suzuki SA, Cashbuildand SportPesa SA.
Next up, NWU turn their attention to the remaining rounds looking to build on the clean sheet and Mngati’s sharp finishing. For TUT, signs of resilience remain, but they leave Mahikeng empty-handed after a narrow, well-contested encounter.
