
Potchefstroom, March 31, 2024 – The Jouberton Police have initiated a manhunt following a disturbing incident where a church in Y100 Section Jouberton, outside Klerksdorp, was targeted by five armed suspects on Thursday night, March 28, 2024. The suspects, all wearing balaclavas, raided the church during a service, terrorizing congregants and robbing them of their valuables.
The sequence of events unfolded when a church member stepped outside to take a phone call. Suddenly, the armed suspects accosted him and forced him back into the church at gunpoint. Once inside, the suspects proceeded to order the congregants to lie down while they ransacked the premises, stealing cash, handbags, and cell phones from the helpless victims. After completing their heinous act, the suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a shaken and traumatized congregation.
Local law enforcement was immediately alerted, and a case of business robbery was registered. However, the suspects managed to evade capture, prompting the police to launch a thorough manhunt to track them down and bring them to justice.
This incident has many community members across the North West talking, commenting on how this makes churchgoers feel and the challenges regarding security in the church. One such voice, to that of Mrs. Thembi Sibeke, a devout Christian and longtime member of the church targeted in the robbery. Mrs. Sibeke expressed her dismay, stating, “It’s truly heartbreaking to see such a sacred place violated in this manner. Our church has always been a sanctuary of peace and worship, and this incident has deeply shaken our faith community.”
Similarly, Mr. Thebe, a concerned resident of Huhudi, shared his thoughts on the incident, saying, “This robbery is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in terms of crime and security. Our community must come together to support the police in their efforts to apprehend these criminals and ensure that such acts of violence do not recur.”
