VRYBURG – North West MEC for Education, Ntsetsao Viola Motsumi, has called for greater responsibility on the roads following the tragic death of two learners from Vryburg High School in a fatal accident earlier this week.
In a statement, on Thursday , 09 April 2026, MEC Motsumi expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the incident as a devastating blow to the education sector and the broader community. She emphasised that the safety of learners, particularly those transported to and from school, must be prioritised at all times.
“The death of one learner is too many. We cannot afford to lose our learners on the road like this,” said Motsumi, urging drivers transporting learners to exercise extreme caution and responsibility.

The MEC noted that the accident occurred as learners were returning to school for the second term, a time when focus should be on academic progress and achievement.
She further confirmed that the Department of Education has already activated psychosocial support services, with the district office providing trauma counselling to affected learners and educators. Additional support will also be extended to the families of the deceased.
Motsumi added that funeral arrangements will be communicated once consultations with the families have been finalised.
The tragic incident, which claimed the lives of two young learners and a driver, has sparked renewed calls for stricter adherence to road safety measures, particularly for scholar transport operators across the province.
Memorial Service and Funeral details are expected to be announced soon by the family and the Department.
