Enhancing Early Childhood Development in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District

Vryburg, Tuesday, 18 July 2023 – The establishment of 40 Early Childhood Development (ECD) pocket centres of excellence by the North West Department of Education has reached the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, where several identified centres are set to benefit from this initiative. These centres will play a crucial role in providing quality education and care for children in the local communities.

Among the identified centres in the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District area are:

1. Boikhutso Pre school (Naledi Local Municipality)

2. Dovendale ELC (Naledi Local Municipality)

3. Remmogo Ipelegeng (Mamusa)

4. Mpudulale ECD (Mamusa Local Municipality)

5. Thutotlhago ECD (Greater Taung)

6. Kgatelo pele creche (Lekwalo Taemane)

7. Kreipende Kruipers creche (Mamusa Amalia)

8. Phatsima ECD (Mamusa Local Municipality)

9. Ratang ECD (Mamusa Local Municipality)

These centres have been selected as models of excellence, meeting the necessary requirements and curriculum standards set by the department. They will serve as beacons of quality early childhood development practices for other centres to emulate.

The implementation of the 40 ECD pocket centres of excellence is expected to create temporary job opportunities throughout the province. MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, expressed her hope that these centres would encourage unregistered ECD centres to follow suit and complete the necessary registration process.

Motsumi further emphasized the importance of these centres in providing a nurturing environment for children. Each ECD centre will have a dedicated storyteller, administrator, and gardener to ensure that the needs of the children are met effectively.

To raise awareness and promote the registration of ECD centres, the North West Department of Education will be conducting a roadshow across the province. The Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District roadshow took place in Vryburg at Times Lodge on 18 July 2023 at 10:00. It was an opportunity for stakeholders, community members, and interested parties to learn more about the importance of early childhood development and how to create centers of excellence in their communities.

According to the department, this initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to improving education and care for young children, as the responsibility for Early Childhood Development was officially transferred from the Department of Social Development to the Department of Basic Education in 2019.

As the North West Department of Education continues to focus on enhancing early childhood development, these pocket centres of excellence mark an important step toward providing a solid foundation for the future success of children in the North West Province.
