The Democracy Bus, an initiative by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), made a meaningful stop in Vryburg’s Extension 25/28 at Saruchera Primary School on Monday, 20 January 2025. The visit formed part of the national campaign to celebrate 30 years of democracy and was organized by GCIS in collaboration with local stakeholders.
The event, led by Naledi Local Municipality Council Speaker Cllr. P. Gulane, placed Grade 7 learners at the heart of the program. The highlight of the day was the inspiring message of support delivered by Naledi Local Municipality Mayor, Advocate C.J. Groep. Addressing the learners before they embarked on the Democracy Bus ride, the mayor drew from Genesis 37:5 to encourage them to dream big and work hard toward their goals. “The visit of the bus is not just about the bus; it’s mainly about you, the learners. You are the leaders, innovators, and change-makers of tomorrow. Greatness begins here, right in your classrooms,” he said.

The mayor likened education to planting a seed, emphasizing its role in creating opportunities and shaping the future. He urged learners to explore the true meaning of democracy beyond elections and politics, reminding them that their hard work and determination could lead to greatness. “Dream big, work hard, and never give up. With faith and determination, you will always achieve what you want to achieve,” he added.
The Democracy Bus, a GCIS initiative, is traveling across South Africa to engage communities in reflecting on the nation’s democratic journey while celebrating its achievements and addressing ongoing challenges. The learners of Saruchera Primary School not only gained insight into the country’s history but were also inspired to envision their roles as future leaders.
The day ended with the learners embarking on a Democracy Bus ride, further immersing themselves in the themes of growth, education, and democratic values. Mr. Topp commended the collaboration between stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in bringing communities together.
This memorable event, organized by GCIS with the support of COGTA and local leaders, left a lasting impression on the learners and underscored the critical role of education in building South Africa’s democratic future.
