In the heart of Extension 25, a beacon of hope and resilience shines bright—Helping Hands Kitchen & Multipurpose Centre. Established in 2020 during the tumultuous waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, this organization has become a lifeline for the less privileged, embodying the spirit of community care and empowerment.

The genesis of Helping Hands Kitchen & Multipurpose Centre traces back to a humble street corner tuckshop, owned by the organization’s founding member, Aobakwe James Motlangwane. As the pandemic engulfed lives and livelihoods, Motlangwane witnessed firsthand the hardships faced by families in his community. With many unable to work and surviving on credit for basic necessities, the specter of hunger and poverty loomed large.

Motivated by a deep sense of compassion and a desire to make a meaningful difference, Motlangwane, along with dedicated volunteers, transformed adversity into action. “We saw it as a way of giving them a fresh start as well as a window to start focusing on taking care of their well-being,” remarked Motlangwane.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Helping Hands Kitchen & Multipurpose Centre persevered, extending its support beyond the initial crisis. Today, their reach and impact continue to grow, touching the lives of countless individuals in Extension 25 and beyond.

One of the organization’s recent milestones includes the acquisition of land in Extension 28—an achievement celebrated as a significant step towards realizing their long-term vision. Motlangwane expressed gratitude for the support received from the local municipality, emphasizing plans to utilize the land for sporting and art activities, in addition to expanding their culinary services for the needy.

Helping Hands Kitchen & Multipurpose Centre thrives on collaboration and partnership. Motlangwane acknowledged the invaluable support from established entities such as the Waterloo Solar project and social institutions like SASSA. Local businesses have also played a pivotal role, contributing resources and goodwill towards the organization’s noble cause.

As Helping Hands Kitchen & Multipurpose Centre embarks on its journey of community upliftment, Motlangwane reiterated their unwavering commitment, stating, “The organization is ready to go the extra mile to help members of the community by any means.” With determination, compassion, and a shared sense of purpose, Helping Hands Kitchen & Multipurpose Centre continues to be a beacon of hope, proving that together, we can create lasting change and build a brighter future for all.
