VRYBURG – Residents of Vryburg and surrounding areas are experiencing severe water shortages due to a major pipeline blockage on the Biesiesvlakte/Armoedsvlakte line. This disruption has led to an emergency response by municipal teams attempting to fix the problem.
On Saturday, 08 February 2025, and Sunday, 09 February 2025, Naledi Local Municipality’s MMC, Cllr. Freddy Mgida, provided an update on the situation, highlighting that excessive pressure in the pipeline made it impossible for maintenance crews to access the blockage area. In a drastic measure, according to the councillor, technicians from Moedi had to break a section of the pipe at a distance from the blockage to release pressure and allow repairs to commence.
As a result, all pumps supplying the Edwin Frylink reservoir were stopped, cutting off water supply to parts of the community. According to Cllr. Mgida, residents should prepare for continued disruptions as “extreme measures” are being taken to resolve the issue.
Adding to the urgency, Cllr. Mgida confirmed that Huhudi’s reservoir levels had dropped to 30%, while Edwin Frylink’s reservoir was sitting at a concerning 28%. Despite receiving 500,000 liters of water from the Pudimoe plant, the supply remains insufficient to meet the demand.

“We hope to get it right today,” said Cllr. Mgida, acknowledging the difficulties faced by maintenance teams. He urged residents to store emergency water supplies as further interruptions could occur if repairs take longer than anticipated.
