11 Arrested in the North West Province On The First Day Of The National Lockdown

Police Minister Bheki Cele, on Friday, 27 March 2020, reported on the status of the SAPS and SANDF’s enforcement of the 21 days lockdown regulations. This is as this day marked the first day of the imposed 21 days as per the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Minister said that the day was of a successful nature, this is as the law enforcement entities were able initiate nationwide roadblocks, responded to tip-offs, as well as making arrests in a number of provinces, including the North West Province. The total number of arrests made were 55 for the first day of the National lockdown, 11 of which were made in the North West Province. These arrests were related to the contravention of regulations and liquor laws.

“They were arrested for hosting street bashes and public drinking.  They were undermining the law, but above that, undermining the lives of South Africans and their own lives. What is happening here is not a war on any South African. It is a war against the enemy called Coronavirus,” said Minister Cele.

In Vryburg, there was visibility of a large contingency of law enforcement officials who patrolled the streets of Huhudi. This was in an effort to encourage everyone to stay at home, for none essential businesses, like informal liquor seller, to stop operating.
