Vryburg Learner to Represent South Africa on Global Stage in Mexico

In a remarkable achievement, 17-year-old Raees Ahmed Khan, a Grade 11 learner from Vryburg High School in North West, is set to represent South Africa at the prestigious ExpoCiencias Nacional in Villahermosa, Mexico, from 3 to 7 December 2024. This international platform will feature over 1,500 of the world’s brightest young minds, showcasing cutting-edge science, technology, and innovation projects.

Raees’ journey to this global stage began with his outstanding performance at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF) held in September, where his project, the Portable Automated Healthcare Device (PAHD), earned him a Gold medal and widespread acclaim. The PAHD is a groundbreaking creation that integrates a blood oxygen monitor, thermometer, and glucose monitoring capabilities, designed to provide accessible first aid and centralised medical history storage.

Driven by his experiences as a first aider in his community, Raees identified the urgent need for an automated healthcare device that could address gaps in emergency first aid and basic health monitoring. “This project is a way to give back to my community and make healthcare accessible to all,” said Raees. His project has already demonstrated promising results, offering a glimpse into how innovation can transform community healthcare.

The event in Mexico will not only provide Raees the opportunity to present his innovative device but will also allow him to engage with young scientists from across the globe. It is a unique chance to collaborate, learn, and share ideas with peers equally passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

The Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation (Acting), Ms Mologadi Motshele, expressed immense pride in Raees’ accomplishment. “We are thrilled that Raees has earned this prestigious honour. His journey represents the power of STEM education in shaping the next generation of leaders and problem-solvers,” she said.

Raees will be accompanied by fellow South African Aman Pati, a Grade 11 learner from Limpopo, who will present his innovation, the “Revolutionizer,” a fuel-free, environmentally sustainable alternative for rocket launches. Together, they will represent South Africa on this global stage, marking a milestone in showcasing the nation’s young talent.

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, commended the young scientists, stating, “Events like ExpoCiencias Nacional are crucial for building connections in the international science community and providing our learners with platforms to excel. We wish Raees and Aman the very best as they showcase their talents to the world.”

Raees will depart South Africa on 30 November 2024, beginning his journey from OR Tambo International Airport via Paris to Villahermosa. His community, school, and the country at large are rooting for him as he embarks on this life-changing experience.

The Vryburg Independent Post congratulates Raees on this exceptional achievement and wishes him success in Mexico. His story is a testament to the incredible potential of South Africa’s youth to lead and inspire on a global scale.
