According to a social media directive on their official page, Vryburg High School(VHS) has announced that there will not be any teaching and learning at the institution on Monday, 15 June 2020.

In an effort to understand the rationale behind VHS’s request to the Department, The VIP Team had an audience with the Department’s Spokesperson, Elias Malindi, who engaged us. According to the Spokesperson, such a request did not come as a surprise to them. This as the department regularly gets requests of this sort, especially from schools that have boarding facilities. “In an effort to meet the parents half way, the institution proposed Monday, 15 June 2020, to be observed as a non-schooling day with a motive of allowing reasonable travel time and other logistics for those who stay in the school premises.” Malindi said.

VHS is one of the schools that opened on Monday, 08 June 2020, to allow for the return of their Grade 12s as regular under South Africa’s the National Lockdown Level 3. With cases on an upward trajectory, the Department has also noted this request by the School to not open on Monday as a good way for the implementation of social distancing, and that the day will help the school to contact further cleaning and sanitizing of the premises.

The Deputy President of South Africa, David Mabuza, in his remark during his visit in the north West Province, was clear in his explanation of the importance of the lockdown. “It is therefore important at all times that we assure our citizens that the Nationwide Lockdown required the closure of many institutions including places of learning and workplaces so that we flatten the curve, restrict movement of people, and enable government to put in place public health measures as we have now done across the country.” Explained the Deputy President.

VHS will resume teaching and learning, according to their directive, on Wednesday, 17 June 2020, as the previous day is a national holiday, Youth Day .
