VRYBURG – The Naledi Municipality Taxi Association (NAMTA) has moved to clarify confusion among commuters after reports emerged that taxi fares on some local routes had increased from 1 June 2026.
According to NAMTA Chairperson J.M. Machogo, the association has not increased its fares and commuters travelling on the Huhudi and Colour Block (Extensions 25 and 28) routes should continue paying R15.

The clarification follows the implementation of a fare increase by another local taxi association, NALLDTA, Naledi Local & Long Distance Taxi Association, which reportedly increased fares on the same routes from R15 to R20 with effect from Monday, 1 June 2026.
Machogo said NAMTA remains committed to its ongoing public consultation process and that fares will remain unchanged for the duration of the association’s suggestion box campaign.
“We have not increased our prices. The fare remains R15 while we continue consulting the community through the suggestion box initiative,” said Machogo.

He explained that NAMTA has proposed increasing fares by R2 from 15 June 2026, which would bring the fare to R17, but stressed that the proposal remains subject to community feedback.
Machogo encouraged commuters and residents to make use of the physical and online suggestion boxes to share their views on the proposed increase.
He added that the proposed adjustment takes into account the socio-economic challenges facing many residents, including unemployment, limited economic opportunities, and the rising cost of living.
Meanwhile, a commuter who requested anonymity said the rivalry between the two taxi associations is a long-standing issue that has existed for years.
The commuter expressed concern that different fare structures on the same routes could create unnecessary confusion for passengers.
“They have reached agreements before, so they should be able to sit down and find a solution again. Having different prices on the same route is confusing for commuters who rely on taxis every day to get to work and back home,” the commuter said.
NAMTA has reiterated its call for public participation, saying commuter feedback will play an important role in determining the way forward on the proposed fare adjustment.
Efforts to get comments from NALLDTA, before the publishing of this article were unsuccessful. However, The Vryburg Independent Post (The VIP) Team, will continue such efforts, in further efforts to clarify the matter to our readers.
