MATHIBESTAD, NORTH WEST — North West Premier Lazzy Mokgosi will on Monday, 5 January 2026, visit the families of two people who died after a lightning strike during the annual Mphebatho Troop Festival at Dertig Sports Ground near Mathibestad.
In a media advisory issued by the Office of the Premier on 4 January 2026, Mokgosi said he will be accompanied by Health MEC Sello Lehari, Moretele Local Municipality Mayor Cllr George Manyike, and other dignitaries. The delegation is expected to first check on survivors receiving treatment at Mathibestad Community Health Centre at 11:00 before proceeding to the bereaved families.

The lightning incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, 3 January 2026, and affected more than 40 people, according to a separate statement issued by Government Communication and Information System (GCIS). Emergency services responded and patients were taken to Mathibestad Clinic for observation, while others were transferred to Jubilee Hospital for further care.
Government said it was extending condolences to the families of those who died, while wishing the injured a full recovery. It also commended emergency personnel and healthcare workers for their swift response, noting that authorities continue to monitor the situation.
