VRYBURG/HUHUDI — North West SAPS has confirmed a drowning incident in Huhudi, on Sunday 4 January 2025, in which a 7-year-old girl was allegedly swept away by floodwater in a flooded street.

According to Lt Col Sam Tselanyane (North West SAPS), the incident happened today at about 17:00. Police say the child was sent to a shop by her mother and was allegedly with a friend when she was swept away by the water. The friend reportedly went to alert the girl’s mother after the incident.

SAPS said an inquest docket has been opened and investigations are underway.

This comes as storm conditions and flooding continue to create dangerous conditions in parts of Vryburg and surrounding communities. Residents are urged to keep children away from flooded roads and open drains, and to avoid walking or driving through moving water.
