As South Africa celebrates 30 years of Freedom and Democracy, one of the focal points of reflection is the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), which marks its 20th anniversary this year. This milestone is not just about looking back at achievements but also acknowledging the challenges faced and opportunities created for millions of beneficiaries across the country.
Speaking to The Vryburg Independent Post Team (The VIP Team), a beneficiary of the EPWP from Vryburg, who asked us to only refer to her only as Ms. Molefe, shared her experiences and insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by the programme.
“In the past few years, EPWP has provided me and many others with much-needed employment opportunities,” Ms. Molefe expressed. “However, it’s essential to recognize that there are challenges that beneficiaries like me encounter.”

Ms. Molefe highlighted the issue of temporary employment, stating, “While EPWP offers short-term jobs, the sustainability of these opportunities remains a concern. Many of us hope for more permanent positions or skills development that can lead to better employment prospects in the long run.”
She also emphasized the need for improved training and support for beneficiaries. “Enhancing the quality of training and support services provided under EPWP would greatly benefit participants and contribute to better outcomes,” Ms. Molefe added.
The 20-year celebration of EPWP, as announced by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), promises millions of additional work opportunities over the next five years. These opportunities are aimed at benefiting women, youth, and disadvantaged households, addressing key socio-economic challenges in communities.
The scheduled event at Buffalo City Stadium, East London, presents an opportunity to reflect on the impact of EPWP over the past two decades and chart a course for its future. It’s a time for stakeholders to come together, share experiences, and explore ways to enhance the programme’s effectiveness and sustainability.
As South Africa continues its journey of democracy, initiatives like EPWP play a vital role in empowering communities, reducing unemployment, and promoting inclusive growth. The challenges faced are acknowledged, but the commitment to overcoming them and maximizing the programme’s impact remains strong.
The VIP Team will continue to follow developments related to EPWP and provide insights into how this programme evolves to meet the changing needs of beneficiaries and communities.
