The Rekgaratlhile Community Library in Stella, a facility that was recently opened to much anticipation, has become a source of frustration for local residents due to its limited functionality. Concerns have been mounting among community members, who are disappointed with the lack of adequate staffing at the library, leading to closures that disrupt access to this essential service.

Staffing Shortages Lead to Library Closures

According to local residents, the Rekgaratlhile Library is currently operated by a single librarian who has been granted family responsibility leave by the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports, and Recreation (ACSR) in the North West province. The librarian, originally from Limpopo, and at times has had to take leave, leaving the library closed since days, sometimes weeks. In such instances, the community is then informed that the library will remain closed until the librarian returns.

This unexpected closures have left many in the community without access to the library’s resources, which are particularly vital for students and other residents who rely on the facility for educational and informational purposes.

Community Efforts to Address the Issue

The community has actively engaged the Department of ACSR, proposing that a librarian from one of the nearby libraries in Vryburg be temporarily deployed to ensure the library remains operational. However, these efforts have been unsuccessful, with the Department citing budget constraints as the reason for not being able to provide additional staffing.

Residents are also frustrated by the fact that interviews were conducted in Stella last year for additional library staff, yet no appointments have been made beyond the current librarian. This has led to questions about the transparency and efficiency of the hiring process.

Response from Local Leadership

Ward 1 Councillor, who represents the area where the Rekgaratlhile Library is located, expressed his concern over the situation. The Councillor acknowledged that he and other community leaders are aware of the issues plaguing the library and share the community’s frustration.

In responding to a media enquiry by The Vryburg Independent Post, the Councillor assured residents that he, along with other local leaders, will urgently engage the Provincial Department regarding the vacant positions that were supposed to be filled after interviews were conducted last year.

Awaiting Departmental Response

The Vryburg Independent Post reached out to the Department of ACSR for a comment on the situation but has not yet received a response. This lack of communication only adds to the community’s frustration, as residents continue to seek answers and a resolution to the ongoing issues at the library.

The community is hopeful that their concerns will be addressed promptly and that the Rekgaratlhile Library can become the functional and reliable resource it was intended to be. The Vryburg Independent Post will continue to follow up with the Department and provide updates as more information becomes available.

For now, the residents of Stella remain in a state of uncertainty, eager for solutions that will allow them to fully benefit from the services their new community library was meant to offer.
