North West Prepares for Rollout of Groundbreaking HIV Prevention Injection

The North West Department of Health has begun preparations for the rollout of Lenacapavir, a groundbreaking HIV prevention medication that is expected to strengthen efforts to reduce new HIV infections across the province.

Health officials responsible for HIV prevention recently met, on Wednesday, 03 June 2026, in Klerksdorp, to discuss implementation plans, clarify roles and responsibilities, and ensure coordinated action among stakeholders ahead of the rollout.

Lenacapavir is a long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication administered through two injections per year. Studies have shown it to be nearly 100% effective in preventing HIV infection, making it one of the most significant advancements in HIV prevention in recent years.

According to the Department of Health, the medication will initially be introduced through a phased approach at 31 pilot health facilities across the province. The pilot programme is aimed at ensuring healthcare facilities are fully prepared before wider implementation.

The national launch of the programme is scheduled to take place in Mpumalanga on 5 June 2026 and will be officiated by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Provincial health authorities say the introduction of Lenacapavir forms part of broader efforts to strengthen HIV prevention and treatment interventions, while improving access to innovative healthcare solutions for communities.

Officials have also finalised readiness plans to ensure selected facilities are equipped to begin offering the new prevention option once the rollout officially commences.
