Lichtenburg–Zeerust, 20 Oct 2025 — The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) has confirmed that a lion being transported on the R49 between Lichtenburg and Zeerust briefly escaped from a trailer on Monday before being successfully captured.

According to the Department, the animal was en route from the Free State to Nietverdiend in the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to residents or motorists.
DEDECT has launched an investigation into whether the transporter complied with the conditions of the permit and national standards for wildlife transport, including SANS 1884-3, which sets requirements for vehicle and cage design, animal handling and welfare. The probe will also verify compliance with Condition 5 of the permit, which obliges the holder to carry public-liability insurance and accept responsibility for any damages caused by escaped animals. The Department warned that severe action will follow if violations are confirmed.
Game farmers and wildlife transporters are urged to obtain all required permits and adhere strictly to safety protocols during transit to protect both the public and the animals.
