This year’s top 10 runner ups, behind the Mahikeng champion Edward Mothibi, included Joseph Manyedi and Gordon Lesetedi, both from Taung, in the Dr Ruth Segomutsi Mompati District, in the North West Province.

Manyedi and Lesetedi are from Takaneng and Sekhing, respectively. The 36-year-old Manyedi finished the race on the 5th position, with a time of 05:44:34. This is his best Comrades finish in the 5 years that he has undertaken this challenge, finishing under 6 hours. Other races that he took part in, in 2019, include the 50km Om Die Dam where he attained the 1st position, the 21km Tuks Bestmed where he finished 2nd , and the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon that he won.

Gordon Lesetedi broke into the top 10 ranks in 2018 finishing the race as sixth, this was a great achievement for him as he attempted the Comrades for the fifth time. Lesetedi, in 2019 , has held on to a 9th position in this year’s race. Finishing it, like last year, under 6 hours. Coached by the experienced John Hamlett, Lesetedi enjoyed a tough training camp in the mountains of Dullstroom. The Safety and Security Officer at Entsika is now 35.

Premier of the North West Province, Professor Job Mokgoro, has expressed words of congratulations to the two Taung men, as well as Mothibi.

“The Comrades Marathon is about endurance, determination and perseverance. I want to salute all the runners especially Edward Mothibi who conquered the ultimate human race. He is an inspiration to all of us and a role to young people. He has indeed made the country and the North West province proud” Mokgoro said.

“Let me also salute Joseph Manyedi from Takaneng – Taung for finishing on position 5 and Gordon Lesetedi from Sekhing – Taung for obtaining position 9 at the 94th edition of the Comrades Marathon. Their great performance has demonstrated that our Province is rich with talent” remarked Premier Mokgoro.
