Vryburg High School’s Raees Khan – International Gold Medalist at the 2024 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists

Raees Khan, a bright young mind from Vryburg High School, has made waves on the international stage by excelling at the 2024 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF). Raees’s innovative invention, a “Portable Automated Healthcare Device,” earned him two prestigious awards at the event, placing him among the top-performing young scientists in the world.

Raees’s hard work, determination, and passion for innovation came to fruition as he secured an Exhibitor’s Award and an International Gold Medal for his project. His “Portable Automated Healthcare Device” was designed to address a critical need for improved access to medication and diagnostic devices, particularly in households with limited resources. His creation also supports maintaining medications in optimal conditions, an issue that is often overlooked in many communities.

In Raees’s own words, “Being an international gold medalist has been very exciting, it has shown that my hard work has indeed paid off, and that constant work and determination reap benefits.” He expressed surprise at winning both the Exhibitor’s Award and the coveted gold medal, stating that it is uncommon for a first-time participant to achieve such recognition at an international science fair.

Raees was awarded:

– The Exhibitor’s Award for the project that stood out the most in the entire event. This award is one of the five most prestigious accolades at the Expo, and he received R1000 in cash along with a laptop pad, courtesy of Eskom Expo.

– The International Gold Medal, awarded to projects that received 80-100% scores after rigorous judging by experts in specific categories. Only the top 66 performers earned this accolade, which is regarded as the most challenging award to secure at the Expo. He was also awarded another R1000 in cash for this achievement.

What makes Raees’s success even more remarkable is that he accomplished all of this without a mentor, which is highly unusual in such competitions. Raees shared that, unlike other participants who typically have a mentor assisting them with their projects and paperwork, he worked independently to bring his project to life. “I had done everything by myself,” Raees added, expressing his pride in overcoming the odds.

Raees’s story is an inspiring example of perseverance and innovation. Despite this being his first time participating in the Eskom Expo, he managed to achieve what many students spend years working towards. He hopes his success will encourage other young learners to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

His accomplishments have put him on the map as one of Vryburg’s rising stars, and he has undoubtedly brought pride to both his school and his community. Raees is a shining example of how dedication to STEM can lead to extraordinary opportunities and success.

As Raees continues his journey in the world of science and innovation, the future looks bright for this determined young inventor. The Vryburg community celebrates his achievements and eagerly awaits his future contributions to the field.
