Vryburg, 25 October 2023- The journey to establish a mall in Vryburg began eight years ago, fueled by a vision to transform the town’s retail landscape. On the 24th of October, The Vryburg Independent Post Team (The VIP Team) had the privilege of joining an illustrious group on a site tour of Mompati Mall, witnessing how that vision has transformed into a reality.

The site tour was an exceptional experience, showcasing the mall’s architectural grandeur and the impressive array of retail stores it now houses. The journey, initiated by its founders, was a remarkable one, leading to a commercial hub that is set to leave an indelible mark on Vryburg’s landscape.

The site tour also became a celebration of Vryburg’s vibrant art and culture, with The Huhudi Art Gallery Exhibitors’ display on the Mall’s Tank Towers. More than then, we were informed of how Primary school learners’ artwork adorns the mall’s walls, ensuring every visit is an artistic and cultural experience. These were submissions channeled through an arts competition related to the opening of the mall, earlier in the year.

The return of Spar to Vryburg is indeed a game-changer. In a local market dominated by large commercial retailers like Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Foodtown Supermarkets, the opening of Spar is a refreshing addition. Its proximity to the people of Huhudi as one of the anchor stores ensures that residents have easy access to a variety of shopping options.

The opening of Mompati Mall signifies more than just a shopping destination. It solidifies Vryburg’s position as the district’s central economic hub. The mall’s presence introduces an infusion of economic activity, bringing new employment opportunities, boosting small businesses, and enriching the lives of the local community.

The VIP Team spoke Cllr. F.D. Mgida, responsible for the Community Services, Housing, and Tourism Portfolio in the municipality’s EXCO, on the sidelines of the site tour and he noted, “This project represents a significant milestone in our district’s journey toward economic growth. The mall not only creates jobs but also nurtures a spirit of entrepreneurship within our community, providing a platform for local businesses to thrive. The return of Spar adds a unique flavor to our local market, further enriching the options available to our residents.”

According to StatsSA, in 2011, Naledi Municipality had a population of 66,781. However, as of the 2022 census, the population has decreased slightly to 63,755. While this decrease may be attributed to various factors, the opening of Mompati Mall brings a glimmer of hope. It signifies an opportunity to reinvigorate the local economy and potentially reverse demographic shifts as residents discover the newfound conveniences and opportunities the mall offers.
