MEC honours late Tiego Tawana learner Onalenna Booi at NSC results ceremony

RUSTENBURG— North West Education MEC Viola Motsumi paid tribute to late Grade 12 learner Onalenna Booi of Tiego Tawana Secondary School during the province’s 2025 National Senior Certificate results programme, where she formally invited his parents to receive his Statement of Results and a Certificate of Recognition on his behalf.

In her address, Motsumi extended condolences to families of learners who died before receiving their results, noting the pain of losing young people who had already completed their final examinations. She said the department remained “deeply touched” by the loss and called on families to find strength and comfort during a difficult period.

Motsumi told the audience that Booi had written and completed his examinations like other candidates, but the department later received news that he passed away on 30 December 2025. She said she had committed to personally handing his results and recognition certificate to the family at the ceremony.

As she addressed bereaved families, the MEC also referenced Psalm 34:18, saying the Lord is close to the broken-hearted, and expressed confidence that families would find comfort beyond what people can provide.

Booi’s death was previously reported in a departmental statement, with the matter understood to be under police attention. The department said it hoped the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

Onalenna completed his Matric as a Bachelor candidate.

“I have also invited the family of the late Donald Boitumelo Maje, who was a learner at Realeka

Secondary School in Ottosdal, under the Ngaka Modiri Molema District. Although we did not

receive the sad news of his passing in time, we nevertheless wish to convey our heartfelt

condolences to the family.” Said MEC Motsumi.
