Gobopamang Primary School’s infrastructure has been put on the spotlight by the Democratic Alliance in the North West Province. This primary school in Taung, is alleged to still make use of pit toilets. Following an oversight inspection to Gobopamang Primary School, the DA further allege to further uncovered that those toilets are

maggot-infested.

The DA intends to write to the MEC for Education, Wendy Matsemela in request to conduct an oversight inspection at the school and make provision for the school’s infrastructure to be upgraded.

According the DA’s Constituency Head at the Greater Taung Local Municipality, Sello Seitlholo, parents informed the DA that the children sometimes resort to relieving themselves in the open veld to avoid making use of the unsanitary and dangerous pit toilets.

“It is also concerning that due to a large number of learners, the teachers are unable to supervise and monitor the children when they use these unsafe pit toilets. The school does not have piped water supply and rely on a water tanker that gets refilled by Sedibeng Water. It is unacceptable that learners are subjected to these inhumane conditions that are hazardous to their health, wellbeing and safety.” Seitlholo said .

The 45 year old school’s infrastructure is said to have dilapidated, walls are cracked and risk collapse and the Department of Education has not made any provision for the upgrades of infrastructure.

The DA claims Gobopamang Primary School to be the only school in the Mothanthanyaneng area that has not been upgraded even though it’s infrastructure is in shambles.

“It is completely unacceptable that our children have to learn in an unsafe environment. This is a direct violation of the children’s Constitutional and basic human rights to enjoy quality basic education.” Expressed Seitlholo.
