A Call For Independent, Unbiased Oversight Inspections at North West Province Schools

“The NWPL school monitoring programme just another tick box exercise” – Freddy Sonakile

A call has been made, by the Democratic Alliance’s Chief Whip in the North West Province, Freddy Sonakile, to relook at the North West Provincial Legislature’s (NWPL) Schools Monitoring Programme for the purposes of developing a programme that will address challenges in schools. Sonakile referred to the current process a “mere tick box exercise”.

“The fact that only schools listed by the Department are visited, defeats the entire purpose of what oversight is and blurs the line of work between the Department as a state entity and the Legislature as an oversight body over state entities.” Said Sonakile

The opposition party’s Chief, Freddy Sonakile has written to the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature in this regard. In his letter Sonakile proposed to the speaker that School monitoring by the Legislature should be guided by Members’ own oversight, constituency work and also challenges experienced by parents, learners and educators that require intervention.

According to Sonakile, “The Department of Education forfeited over R300 million of its infrastructure grant over the past two financial years, and yet there are still schools with serious infrastructure challenges such as pit toilets and dilapidated classrooms.”
