The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West has officially confirmed that an inquest case has been opened following the tragic fire that claimed the life of an elderly woman on Mariri Street in Huhudi.

Speaking to The Vryburg Independent Post Team (The VIP Team), SAPS Provincial Spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed that an inquest docket has been registered to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and the death of the elderly victim. Further forensic investigations are also reported to be underway.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning, 06 July 2025, prompting neighbors to alert emergency services. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames, but sadly, the body of the elderly woman was discovered inside the house and declared dead on the scene by forensic officials.

An inquest is a legal process used to determine the cause and circumstances of a death when it is suspected to be unnatural or unexplained. In cases like this, an inquest allows investigators to establish whether foul play, negligence, or accidental causes were involved.
