PUDUMOE PRISON BREAK: Murder accused rearrested hours after escaping police custody

PUDIMOE – 3 September 2026: A murder accused has been rearrested just hours after allegedly escaping from police custody while being transported to Maganeng Clinic for medical treatment.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West, Tshepo Lobelo was among four detainees transported from Pudimoe Police Station to the clinic on Tuesday, 2 September.

Lobelo allegedly escaped at approximately 10:50 upon arrival at the clinic and fled into nearby bushes.

Police immediately launched a search operation and activated the 72-Hour Activation Plan, mobilising a multidisciplinary team comprising various SAPS units and specialised resources.

The search resulted in Lobelo’s rearrest at approximately 19:45, less than nine hours after his alleged escape.

Lobelo was initially arrested in connection with a murder case dating back to 2024. His murder matter had been postponed to 7 December 2026 at the time of his escape.

He will now face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody and is expected to appear before the Pudimoe Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 4 September 2026.

SAPS said the circumstances surrounding the escape, including the transportation, restraint and supervision of the detainee, will be investigated.

North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams commended the multidisciplinary team for its swift response and successful rearrest.

“An escape from lawful custody is a serious matter, and every effort will be made to ensure that those who attempt to evade the justice system are brought back to face the full might of the law,” Adams said.

Investigations into the escape remain ongoing.
