Sunday, 8 September 2024 – A tragic accident claimed the lives of two individuals and left 18 others injured on the R378 road, approximately five kilometers from Ganyesa towards Morokweng. The accident occurred in the evening when a Toyota Hilux single cab collided with a stray cow, which led to a secondary collision involving a minibus taxi, a Toyota Quantum. The impact caused the taxi to lose control and overturn on its side.

According to the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, 18 passengers sustained injuries, five of whom are in critical condition. Six passengers emerged unharmed, while seven suffered minor injuries. All injured individuals were transported to Ganyesa District Hospital for medical attention. The road was temporarily closed as law enforcement agencies continued their investigation into the cause of the accident.

The MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, expressed his concern over the frequent accidents caused by stray livestock. “The roaming of livestock on our roads in the evening is a cause for concern, and we are urging our communities to look after their livestock. Each week, we receive reports of accidents caused by these stray animals,” said MEC Morweng. He further urged motorists to reduce speed when entering villages, especially when visibility is poor.

The MEC extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
