NWU Mahikeng Postpones Freshers’ Ball Over Safety Concerns

MAHIKENG – The North-West University (NWU) Mahikeng campus has postponed its much-anticipated Freshers’ Ball, which was scheduled for Saturday, 25 April 2026, citing safety concerns following adverse weather conditions.

In a statement issued by the Students’ Campus Council (SCC), heavy rainfall experienced on Friday, 24 April significantly disrupted event preparations. Organisers indicated that the main stage could not be fully erected and was found to be unstable, posing a serious safety risk to both performers and attendees.

Efforts to secure an alternative venue were unsuccessful due to the scale of the event, capacity requirements, and limited time. The SCC said the decision to postpone was taken in the interest of ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved.

The Freshers’ Ball had generated widespread excitement among students, with a high-profile lineup that included DJ Maphorisa, Nasty C, Uncle Waffles, and Focalistic. Several ticket phases had already sold out ahead of the event.

The postponement is particularly notable given that large-scale first-year social events on the Mahikeng campus have been relatively limited in recent years. The last officially documented similar event was a Fresher’s Bash held on 11–12 May 2019, highlighting the significance and anticipation surrounding this year’s planned return under the theme “The Return: Freshman Edition.”

The SCC has assured students that efforts are underway to identify a new date for the event, which will be communicated in due course.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of the student community,” the council said.

The Freshers’ Ball remains one of the flagship student events aimed at welcoming first-year students and fostering campus unity, with organisers reaffirming their commitment to ensuring it takes place under safe and suitable conditions.
