As South Africa gears up for the upcoming elections in May 2024, Eskom, the country’s leading electricity provider, has issued a stern warning regarding the illegal placement of election posters on its electricity structures. The utility company emphasizes that this practice is not only unlawful but also poses serious safety risks to individuals involved.

In a media statement released on Saturday, 27 April 2024, Eskom highlighted the dangers associated with placing campaign posters on electrical structures such as electricity poles, towers, meter boxes, and mini substations. The primary concern outlined by Eskom is the risk of electrocution or electrical shock to individuals who come into contact with these structures while attempting to affix posters.

Eskom’s concern stems from previous incidents where individuals have been injured or even killed due to inadvertent contact with electrical infrastructure during the placement of election posters. The nature of electricity, being invisible to the naked eye, increases the likelihood of accidental flashovers or electrical contacts, leading to severe injuries or fatalities.

The utility company reminds all political parties and their supporters that only authorized personnel are permitted to climb or work on electrical structures. Quoting Section 19 (5) of the Electrical Machinery Regulations, Eskom emphasizes that encroaching on the minimum safety clearances required around power lines is strictly prohibited without permission from the relevant authorities.

Not only is attaching posters to electrical structures a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (No.85 of 1993), but it also endangers the lives of employees, members of the public, and volunteers involved in election campaigns.

In light of these safety concerns, Eskom urges political parties and individuals to refrain from attaching posters to electrical infrastructure to prevent any potential injuries or loss of lives. The company’s priority remains the safety and well-being of all individuals, and compliance with safety regulations is essential to avoid tragic incidents during the election period.

Eskom’s proactive stance on safety underscores the importance of responsible behavior and adherence to legal guidelines, particularly when dealing with critical infrastructure such as electricity networks.
