A tragic accident that occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, 16 July 2025, in the heart of Vryburg has resulted in the death of a 27-year-old male pedestrian. 

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, the incident took place at the busy intersection of Market and Moffat Streets. It is alleged that a truck hit the pedestrian while turning, causing the victim to sustain serious injuries. Emergency services swiftly responded and transported the injured male to the local hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Sadly, SAPS has confirmed that the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and passed away on the morning of Thursday, 17 July 2025.

Contrary to the Community’s anticipation that the driver would be charged with murder, the police have since confirmed to The VIP Team that a case of reckless and negligent driving, which remains under active investigation, has been opened. Due to the nature of the case, the truck driver has not been arrested at this stage. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Van Rooyen explained that “investigations are continuing and the court will give directives once all evidence has been concluded.”

According to community members who reportedly know the young man, described him as a young creative. “He used to put on show stopping solo dance performances in town. It’s scary how a lot of our young people in Vryburg are going astray, and such untimely deaths of such young people are a tragedy.” A community member said.

This devastating incident has sent shockwaves through the Vryburg community, as the intersection where the accident occurred is one of the busiest and most frequented by both pedestrians and motorists.

Residents are once again reminded to exercise extreme caution on the roads and to be mindful of pedestrian zones, especially in areas with high foot traffic.
