South African Weather Service announced the arrival of a cut-off low pressure system on the South Western parts of the country. This announcement was part of a statement the entity published on Tuesday, 01 September 2020, ushering in the new spring season. Seasonally, it is around this time of the year that most parts of the country will begin to get a bit warmer and more pleasant for most. Be that as it may, SA Weather Service’s announcement painted a different picture this Spring day. Strong winds swept over most parts of the central interior, mainly in North-West and the Free State as well as the Cape provinces. “This will result in fire danger conditions over the western parts of North- West, the eastern interior of the Northern Cape as well as the western and central parts of the Free State Province.” The statement read.

Winds along the coastal areas reached speeds of up to 70Km/h, while in the interior areas, specifically in the North West Province’s Vryburg town, wind speeds of up to 40km/h we measured. Around 15mm of precipitation is expected in the Vryburg area and scattered minimal showers will move along as the damaging wind continues to blow.

01 September Weather

These gale force winds, according to the SA weather Service (SAWS), will persist until Thursday, 03 September 2020, and today conditions are expected to persist in many places over the Cape provinces, the Free State and North-West Province.

As the sun sets in Vryburg, wind speeds showed a bit of restraint, with wind speeds shying away from the 30km/h and easing into the lower twenties. If forecasts by the SAWS are anything to go by, Vryburgers and most parts of the North West Province should expect a bit more sunshine this Thursday, and less windy conditions.
