SOPA NW 2019: Mokgoro Speaks to Joblessness

In his acknowledgement that joblessness is a great challenge in the country and specifically in the North West Province, Premier Jon Mokgoro spoke to specific issues that the sixth administration intends to utilize for the benefit of alleviating this challenge.

Premier Mokgoro urged that this to be a dug of war from one side, where the public sector and private sector are pulling from one side again this persisting issue of joblessness. The Premier views the creation of sustainable job creation in any economic sector as an important aspect of development.

There are plans for the provision of incentives to investors establishing business enterprises in poor rural areas on the cards. This in the administration’s effort promote investment and to stimulate economic growth in the North West Province.

Some of the initiatives under the Premier’s consideration for implementation relate to the following:

  • Favourable municipal property tax in the first three years of the business;
  • Use part of the expanded public works scheme allocation to subsidize the wage bill of investors in the designated areas especially during the first three years after business startup;

“Mining, agriculture, tourism and the arts have the potential to create quality jobs and are therefore selected as the priority sectors for support during the sixth administration.” Premier Mokgoro said.
