North West Mourns Passing of Former Premier Bushy Maape

Mahikeng – North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi has expressed deep sadness following the passing of former North West Premier and struggle veteran, Kaobitsa “Bushy” Maape.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the Premier on Sunday, 17 May 2026, Maape passed away in Johannesburg on Saturday after a short illness while surrounded by his family.

Premier Mokgosi described Maape as a committed freedom fighter, ethical leader, and dedicated public servant whose life was defined by service to the people and the struggle for democracy.

Maape played an active role in the anti-apartheid struggle following the 1976 student uprisings, during which he left the country to receive political and military training through the African National Congress (ANC). He later returned to South Africa and reportedly helped establish and command underground ANC structures operating in areas including Mahikeng, Vryburg, Taung, Kuruman, and Kimberley.

His political activism led to his imprisonment on Robben Island during the 1980s. While incarcerated, he pursued higher education studies through the University of the Western Cape, completing qualifications in psychology, economics, and development studies.

Following his release and South Africa’s democratic transition in 1994, Maape served in several senior government roles, including as Chief Director for the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) and Planning in the Office of the Premier.

He later returned from retirement to assist in stabilising governance in the North West during a period marked by administrative challenges and the implementation of Section 100 intervention in the province. During his tenure as Premier, he was credited with contributing to the lifting of the intervention.

Among his notable contributions were the relaunch of the provincial bursary scheme for disadvantaged learners, the introduction of the Thuntsha Lerole accelerated service delivery programme, and efforts to revive the province’s Growth and Development Strategy.

Premier Mokgosi said Maape embodied selflessness and integrity in leadership.

“He was a committed compatriot who dedicated his entire life to the struggle for a democratic and prosperous country,” Mokgosi said.

Tributes continue to pour in from political leaders, government officials, and members of the public remembering Maape’s contribution to the liberation struggle and development of the North West province.
