Naledi Local Municipality Embraces Smart Metering for Improved Service Delivery

The Naledi Local Municipality has taken a significant step toward modernising its utilities management by implementing smart metering technology. This initiative, supported by grant funding from National Treasury and delivered in partnership with companies like Macrocomm, Ontec, and Vodacom, is set to transform how the municipality manages electricity billing and revenue collection.

The introduction of smart meters will bring many benefits to the community, including more accurate billing and better transparency in utility management. By upgrading the outdated system, the municipality can effectively monitor electricity usage, prevent tampering, and reduce illegal activities like electricity theft. This is expected to result in better financial management and improved service delivery to residents.

Sivi Moodley, CEO of Macrocomm Group, expressed excitement about the positive impact of the project, stating, “Our goal is to help as many municipalities as possible. Every municipality is unique, but the challenges they face are often similar. We’re excited to bring the solutions we’re implementing in Naledi to other municipalities, one smart meter at a time.”

The project also aims to create local job opportunities through skills development programmes. Macrocomm is committed to providing NQF-accredited training for young people in the region, helping them gain valuable skills that can lead to long-term employment.

In addition to improving utility management, the Naledi Municipality hopes that the smart metering initiative will prevent financial mismanagement, which has plagued other municipalities like Emfuleni, which is currently under administration due to significant debt. The municipality’s new system will help protect its revenue streams and contribute to stabilising the national electricity grid.

Municipal Manager, Mr. MT. Segapo, expressed his enthusiasm for the project:

“We are proud to be moving forward with this smart metering initiative, which marks a turning point in how we manage our resources and deliver services to the community. This technology will not only improve the accuracy of billing and enhance revenue collection but also promote transparency and accountability in our operations. Our goal is to ensure that residents benefit from efficient services while we address long-standing challenges like electricity theft and financial mismanagement. We are committed to working closely with our partners to provide training and job opportunities, ensuring that this project contributes to the growth and prosperity of our local economy.”

The municipality has partnered with several stakeholders to ensure the successful rollout of the smart meters, and training programs are being put in place to equip local residents with the necessary skills to maintain and operate the new system.

According to municipal Manager, this project represents more than just a technological upgrade—it’s a forward-thinking approach to safeguarding the financial health of Naledi Municipality and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
