Memorial Service to Celebrate Bushy Maape’s Legacy of Youth Empowerment and Leadership

The upcoming memorial service of former North West Premier Kaobitsa “Bushy” Maape will centre on celebrating his enduring legacy as a leader who inspired young people and contributed to shaping the province’s future.

Set to take place on Friday, 22 May 2026 at Huhudi Hall in Vryburg, the memorial service carries the powerful theme describing Maape as “a political and intellectual juggernaut whose contribution ignited the youth, shaped the present and constructed the future.”

The theme reflects Maape’s long-standing commitment to youth development, education, good governance, and socio-economic transformation throughout his years in public service and the liberation struggle.

Political leaders, alliance partners, community members, and residents from across the North West are expected to gather to pay tribute to the former Premier, who passed away on Saturday, 16 May 2026 after a short illness.

Throughout his political career, Maape was widely recognised for championing initiatives aimed at improving access to education, empowering disadvantaged communities, and strengthening service delivery in the province. He also played a key role in reviving programmes such as the provincial bursary scheme and the Thuntsha Lerole service delivery campaign.

The memorial service is expected to reflect on both his political contribution and personal impact on communities, particularly young people who viewed him as a mentor and advocate for development.

Maape’s funeral service will take place on Saturday, 23 May 2026 at the Huhudi Sports Facility in Vryburg.
